Winter Solitude
This Cardinal painting was done as a commission for a private collector. It was designed to be a companion piece to my recent bluebird print "Spring Announcement". Like most of my paintings, the original was completed with oil paints on gessoed masonite board. It measures 10X14 inches.
This image features a male Cardinal in winter habitat. I'm continually astounded by the brilliant scarlet color of these regal birds especially when paired with the dull, colder colors of winter. I strived to capture that quality in this painting. As always, I worked to get a natural feel throughout this scene ...something that can be a challenge when working with subjects (like the cardinal) who possess such bright and bold color.
I spend a lot of time in the field (in very cold weather I might add), with my camera in hand, working to get quality reference for my artwork. As I'm sitting there waiting for the birds to come flying in, I spend time studying the actual colors, mood, light, etc. One thing that has always intrigued me is snow fall. It is something that is difficult to capture well with a camera because generally the amount of light is not adequate enough to freeze the action. So, I'm left trying to recall it from the field to the studio. I enjoy seeing the individual snow flakes that land on my jacket. Each one different and beautiful. I also like seeing the big snow flakes (generally made up of many small individual snow flakes) which break into pieces as they come into contact with the winter landscape. I tried to capture all of this in Winter Solitude. As you will see, many of the snow flakes in this painting are unique and very carefully rendered.
The prints of "Winter Solitude" are now available. They turned out very nice and are made to match "Spring Announcement" in virtually every way to ensure that they look like a set hanging side by side in your home. They will also fill the same sized space incase you want to rotate them out with each other, with the change of the seasons. Please inquire through email adamgrimmart@gmail.com or call (440)225-2267.

Grimm was a three-time winner of the NRA sponsored Junior Wildlife Art Competition and since, went on to win the prestigious Federal Duck Stamp Competition at the age of 21 and has been commissioned for several state duck stamps, as well as obtain many other celebrated awards and recognitions. In “Gems of Fall”, Grimm uses a warm autumn backdrop to illuminate four majestic mallards as they fly over marshy waters.
Each duck’s individual colors shine in the sun’s morning glow, creating a visually stunning piece that is sure to win its way into any duck hunter’s heart or home.
Each unframed giclée canvas print measures approximately 17 X 28 inches, and are hand signed by the artist, and numbered between 1/150 - 150/150 (Artist Proof).
This is one of my newest paintings. It was done exclusively for the NRA. The original measures 22 X 36 inches and is completed with oil paints on masonite board. With this image, I wanted to create an interesting, colorful composition, while maintaining a natural feel. Painting birds accurately in flight has always been a goal of mine. It is a unique challenge but it is something that I enjoy making an attempt at. I wanted to give the viewer the sense of being in very close proximity to these Mallards as they are back flapping in for a landing. You might notice that the main hen mallard is even looking at you.
The background is from some farmland in Ohio where I grew up hunting. I have many great memories from this location.
I know many people have a favorite season but I do not. I enjoy each season for specific reasons. I love the variety of colors you get in the fall as well as watching the fall migration. My objective with this painting was to try and encompass both.
As for prints, I have a limited amount of Artist Proofs available for sale. The NRA will have the rest of the prints at their events. Giclées are a high quality print on canvas. They are known for having the look of an original painting and are typically framed up the way an original would be. I am offering them un-stretched and unframed only. Image size measure 17 X 28 inches and look great once stretched and framed. To inquire about purchase, please contact me at adamgrimmart@gmail.com or by phone at (440)225-2267.
