“Glencross, SD Church” (5” x 7” - Graphite - 1999)
Glencross, SD Church

Driving through South Dakota is an amazing thing to me. It is so vast and still so wild in so many places.

Glencross is a very small town that lies off of a small road just off of State Route 20. It is virtually a ghost town. The last I remember it’s population was less then 10! One of the most intriguing Catholic churches stands in this small town. I love when nature reclaims old buildings. Old barns really intrigue me as well. However, this was the first time I had seen it happen with a church. Old buildings can be dangerous but I had to take time to look around. From the outside, it is easy to imagine how beautiful this church once was. A closer look, though, reveals a very weathered structure whose end was near. A fox had been using the church basement for a den and there were feathers and bones scattered about. When I turned to leave, I saw what the fox must have seen many times. The way the light streamed in through the small doorway certainly seemed like some sort of message from God. Almost like the passing of an old friend, I was saddened recently to hear that they burnt the church to the ground
