This painting was my first state duck stamp painting. It features the Pacific race of the common eider. This stamp was chosen by Bob Dumaine (a known duck stamp authority) as his favorite stamp design for 2000 in The Duck Report journal.
I have always been fascinated with watching ducks on rough water. I like the way that they seem to disappear and then reappear again with the rise and fall of every swell. Also, I enjoy seeing stormy weather. Ominous skies are usually the most dramatic. For this piece, I wanted to show a storm moving through. In the distance, you can actually see the rain falling down in sheets. Having the sun peak through on these types of days is usually extremely beautiful.
